Kathryn M. Diemer, M.D.

Assistant Professor of Medicine
Assistant Dean of Career Development
Clinical Director, Bone Health Program

After receiving her medical degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas Ciry, MO, Dr. Diemer completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO. Her clinical activity is located in the Bone Health Clinic at Barnes-Jewish Hospital West County, and she continues to educate local physicians about the treatments and services available for osteoporotic patients. In addition, via extramural activities in the Office of the Dean, she assists in matching Washington University Medical Students to post-graduate training opportunities.

Research Interests

Dr. Diemer's research activity is focused on developing a program with the hospitalists to initiate osteoporosis treatment in hip-fracture patients immediately after their admission to the Orthopedic Service. The plan is to compare patient care regimens between hospitalists, orthopedists, and primary care physicians. At this time in this retrospective study, they have found that a patient admitted with a hip fracture and followed by the hospitalists, as opposed to the other groups, was more likely to receive treatment for osteoporosis. This is the first study showing a statistically significant difference in the level of care performed by a hospitalist service. In addition, she and the group are preparing a patient educational brochure including referral information to the Bone Health Program for treatment recommendations after discharge.
