Education

Consistent with its mission, the Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases continues to offer in-depth training for both physicians and basic scientists interested in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of skeletal disorders. The foundation of our training program rests with the NIH sponsored Training Grant T32, which is now in its 28th year of continuous funding. Since its inception in 1975, this program has supported the training of 232 individuals by our faculty. Of the 110 trainees that entered our training program in the last 10 years, 83% are pursuing academic careers, or are full time employees of industrial and biotechnical companies. Many of the current leaders in the field of metabolic bone disease can claim to have been trained at Washington University.

A fourth year elective rotation is now available for medical students interested in bone health management under the guidance of Drs. Kathryn Diemer and Michael Whyte. The Bone Health Clinic rotation has been opened to MD-level trainees of Dr. Oksana Volshteyn of Rehabilitation Medicine with the first trainee having recently finished her rotation. As a condition for clinical re-appointment and administered by Dr. Reina Villareal, the CME Bone Biology Clinical Case Conference with Medicine, Pathology, and Pediatrics Bone Health Clinicians was reinstated after a three-year hiatus. Within this forum, students deliver case presentations and undergo evaluation by the physician-faculty. Additionally, one MD-PhD student and a new Endocrine Fellow have recently joined the Division, with each pursuing research projects under the tutelage of Dr. Towler in his laboratory.
